In Portland, Oregon, resides a monument comparable to the Eiffel Tower, Mona Lisa, or the Colosseum: Powell’s City of Books. Comprised of four, glorious stories and a sea of books, the bookstore is every book-fanatics dream come true.
If you’re looking to book your next trip, here are five reasons why Powell’s Books should be your next destination.
1. It’s Absolutely Gorgeous
Firstly, the bookstore is stunning, inside and out. Opening the doors and entering the shop is literally the greatest feeling ever. Honestly, it’s a very enlightening experience. When you first walk in, there’s a huge wall in the back that is just filled with books. Trust me when I say that it is a sight to behold.
The only word I can use to describe how I felt walking the halls of the shop is bliss. Furthermore, the aesthetic of the place is honestly everything. I want to hole up in the young adult section and live there for eternity.
2. There’s FOOD
Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I learnt that there was a coffee shop. With coffee, and more importantly, food! The room is so cute, and I love snacks with all that I am, so I wasn’t complaining. Though I didn’t personally have any coffee, my family thought it was actually really good.
Additionally, the art that they do in the latte’s are TOTALLY Instagram-able!
3. The Organization of the Store is Awesome
Next, though the giant store may seem daunting at first, the organization of the space makes it really easy to navigate. Besides the obvious, like signs and maps, the way that each individual section is organized is really convenient. In the YA section, where I spent most of my time, there were a lot of suggested books. As in, a lot of books had a reason why someone liked it taped onto the shelf the book was on. Because of this, those books caught my interest first, and I found a few good ones.
In addition to that, there were a lot of shelves that had the staff’s favorites numbered from like 1-10, or bestsellers numbered in a similar way. I personally find it helpful to know what other people liked when picking books, so that was a pleasant surprise.
4. The Staff Members are Wonderful
Moving on, as soon as you walk into the store, you can tell that there is a good atmosphere. This is because of the lovely employees that work there. They were so sweet and so willing to talk about any topic, and I couldn’t be more grateful to them.
When I was buying my books, I actually got to talk to the cashier about why she liked the books I picked, as she had read two of them. It’s really nice to know that the people who work there love books as much as the people who shop there.
5. There is a Great Variety of Different Books
As you would assume, when a bookstore is four stories, they have quite the impressive selection of books. There were books about absolutely everything! The bookshelves were at least ten shelves high, if I can remember correctly, and they were spread across the entire store. No matter where your heart lies with you book taste, I can guarantee you that Powell’s will have something for you.
All in all, Powell’s Books was a dream come true. It’s everything you could ever ask of a bookstore, and much more. So, if you’re ever in the neighborhood, make sure to stop by Powell’s Books. I can assure you that you won’t regret it.
