Let me be blunt- in Seven Ways We Lie I think that each character represents one of the seven deadly sins listed on the cover. Also just a warning for this part, to explain all of this I will have to include spoilers. So SPOILERS AHEAD!
Let’s start with Juniper. At first I thought lust would be Olivia but once you find out the student-teacher affair is with her, I think she represents lust. And in the aftermath of the teacher leaving and all of her connection with him severed, it seemed like she could not stop thinking about him; it seemed like her life was centered around this guy- hence her representing lust.
Kat I believe to be sloth. Sloth is described as not taking care of yourself and neglecting important things. We learn in the book that her grades have slipped, she doesn’t talk to her family and walls herself off from the world around her. Yes, she gets much better by the end of the novel but in all I think she represents sloth.
Valentine I see as envy for he seems envious of his peers. He seems envious of how socially they are all better than him. It’s a short explanation but it seems fitting to me.
Clair was wrath without a doubt. Personally, I didn’t like Clair. What she did to Lucas was not okay all the way from setting him up to not being understanding about his sexuality. I could see how others would think she could also be envy especially with how she thought of Juniper and Olivia, but as a whole it seemed more like wrath because she took everything to the most extreme that she could. Plus, she never seemed like a true friend to me. Calling your friend a slut behind her back and constantly wanting to say thing like that was just so mean. She definitely fit wrath in my book.
Now the last three, pride, gluttony, and greed, for some reason were hard for me to put a name to. But now that I’ve slept on it, and thought about the book, it seems far too easy to say who these three go to.
Oliva fits pride to me, even though she seems like a good person and pretty level headed- pride is described as someone who is in a selfish realm, and Oliva just seems to fit the part to me. Even though she isn’t in your face selfish, out of the group and how the school thinks of her; pride seems to fit the role.
Matt is obviously gluttony. Gluttony means overindulgence, and Matt constantly “overindulges” in weed. It seems fairly simple to me, how he’s always with a blunt in hand, or under the influence of it, gluttony just seems to fit Matt’s character perfectly.
Finally, is greed. Before I was sitting here racking my brain about who would fit greed, and I didn’t know what Lucas would fit so before I just thought process of elimination, but then I remembered his obsession with money. How he was always so happy to be the owner of the most expensive watch in school. And how if he wasn’t really thinking, his mind floated to money. And sometimes even his life back in New York.
Anyways, that’s just my opinion and what I thought! If you have any other ideas, sound off in the comments below!!
